Doane's Dribblers sign up set for Jan. 7

Doane's Dribblers is back. All boys and girls in the first and second grade are invited to learn about basketball then put on a half-time performance to show off their skills. Writers' competition opens for nonfiction, memoir, fiction

Write On The River is pleased to announce the opening of its ninth annual writers' competition. Categories are nonfiction (essay, article, or memoir, on any theme or subject) and fiction (short story on any theme or subject), each with a 1,000-word limit. All submissions must be postmarked by Feb. 17, 2017. The six winners will be notified by April 14, and their placement and awards will be announced at the Write On The River Conference on May 20, 2017. Visit www.writeontheriver.org. (er50,51)

'Hometown Heroes' nominations needed

The American Red Cross is looking for the "Hometown Heroes" among us. If you know of a local individual or organization who has done something courageous or exceptional that deserves recognition, take the time to nominate them. Nominations accepted until Feb. 15, 2017. Nominees selected as a Hero award recipient by an independent panel of community leaders will be honored at the annual "Hometown Heroes Celebration" on Thursday, March 23, at the Wenatchee Convention Center.
