Doane's Dribblers sign up set for Jan. 7

Doane's Dribblers is back. All boys and girls in the first and second grade are invited to learn about basketball then put on a half-time performance to show off their skills. Upper Valley Connection seeks ski coaches

Upper Valley Connection is seeking coaches for its Special Olympics Nordic Ski team. Basic skiing experience needed, but no coaching experience necessary. Practice is 2-4 p.m. Sundays in January and February. Email uppervalleyconnection@gmail.com or at 509-888-4181.

Wenatchee Boy Scouts recycle Christmas trees

 Wenatchee Boy Scout Troop 7, in partnership with Chelan County Public Works, is handling the disposal of Christmas trees. On Saturday, Jan. 7, Christmas trees can be dropped off at the Chelan County Shop in Wenatchee, 210 Easy St., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Scouts will be collecting the trees for recycling. A $5 donation is suggested. Donations will go to Troop 7 to support its programs. Trees also can be dropped off for recycling at the Dryden Transfer Station at 9073 Highway 2, in Dryden.  When dropping off a tree, make sure it is free of all tinsel and decorations. Genealogical society meets

The Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society will meet at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 9, at the Douglas County PUD Auditorium, 1151 Valley Mall Parkway, East Wenatchee. We will feature a webinar CD by nationally-known genealogist Beth Foulk, entitled "Problem Solving with Fans." For information, call 884-6455. Free and open to the public. (e01,02)

'Hometown Heroes' nominations needed

The American Red Cross is looking for the "Hometown Heroes," an individual or organization who has done something courageous or exceptional that deserves recognition. Nominations accepted until Feb. 15, 2017. Forms are available at 663-3907 or megan.snow@redcross.org. Nominees selected as a Hero award recipient by an independent panel of community leaders will be honored at the annual "Hometown Heroes Celebration" on Thursday, March 23, at the Wenatchee Convention Center.

Writers' competition opens

Write On The River's ninth annual writers' competition is open. Categories are nonfiction (essay, article, or memoir, on any theme or subject) and fiction (short story on any theme or subject), each with a 1,000-word limit. All submissions must be postmarked by Feb. 17. The six winners will be notified by April 14, and their placement and awards will be announced at the Write On The River Conference on May 20.
