Awaiting the Bronze Shoe Match

Posted

The Cashmere Bulldogs are gearing up for the anxiously awaited Bronze Shoe game against the Chelan Goats in the Homecoming game on Friday, October 20.
This year will mark the 22nd 'Shoe' game that Zukowski has been involved with.
Yet, after seeing so many Bronze Shoe games played, Zukowski will be retiring from his head coaching position at the end of this season.
The most impactful thing about the Bronze Shoe games, Zukowski said, is having to see the opposing teams take home the trophy.
"That really did hurt each time," Zukowski said. "You don't want to feel the pain of losing that shoe."
Because the big game is taking place on the week of Homecoming, Zukowski stated that there are a lot of distractions for the boys that they will have to work to overcome.
Zukowski emphasized that while the boys should have fun and get involved with Homecoming, they will have to realize that all of the focus has to be on the game the moment they set foot in the locker room on game night.
"We have to make sure that carries over to Friday night," Zukowski said of the message he wants to instill in his players' minds.
Another thing Zukowski wants his team to focus on is finding out how to counter the Goats' offensive line's size, as they are huge.
"They are gigantic," Zukowski said. "Every year they're big."
One of the best parts of the Bronze Shoe game is seeing the big smiles on the boys' faces after their win and seeing how much their hard work paid off.
"Inside, they're saying to themselves, 'Yeah, it was worth it'."
Currently, Cashmere is 2-1 in the CTL and 4-3 in their season overall. Chelan is 0-1 in the CTL and 1-5 in their season.
As a way of helping the boys prepare for the upcoming game, Zukowski encourages the 'dogs to look into the latest college football games and see all of the upsets that have been happening.
"There were a ton," Zukowski said of upsets. "Teams that should've won didn't."
Watching these games will hopefully aid the team in learning what they should and should not do for their game against Chelan.
"They've got to come in and do what they do to take care of business," Zukowski said.
According to Zukowski, if the team loses this game then they will go into a crossover game afterwards.
Lose the crossover game and they will have to go further out to play other teams elsewhere.
Zukowski looks forward to this year's Bronze Shoe game and hopes for the best for his boys.
"Let's keep it rollin'," Zukowski said of the season.
