Cashmere finishes sixth in state after hard-fought battle with Lakeside Eagles

Posted

YAKIMA - The Cashmere Bulldogs played their fourth game in four days at the WIAA 1A State Girls Basketball Tournament in the Yakima Sun Dome on Saturday.  The Bulldogs led throughout most of the contest before being outscored 16-5 in the final quarter by the Lakeside Eagles as they suffered a tough loss to end their 2023-2024 campaign.  However, the Bulldogs have a lot to be proud of as they finished the season with an impressive 21 wins, a Caribou Trail League championship, a District VI title, and a 6th place finish at the WIAA 1A State Tournament.

The Bulldogs took a 22-19 lead into the half on Saturday, and trailed by just two points (34-36) heading into the final eight minutes of action.  However, the Bulldogs were running on fumes in the final period and were unable to keep up with Eagles.

Senior Brianna Talley had an outstanding final game in a Bulldog uniform as she scored a game-high 22 points.  Talley went 4-for-7 from downtown, and converted 9 of her 14 free throw attempts.  She also added 6 rebounds, and had a pair of steals.  Talley was named 2nd Team All-Tournament Team for her outstanding play at the Sun Dome this week.  Junior Allie McKenna added 5 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in the final game of the season for Cashmere.  Junior Ellie Bessonette continued to be a force on the glass as she pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds before fouling out with 5 minutes remaining in the contest when the Bulldogs trailed by just two points.

Cashmere shot just 21% from the floor on Saturday, and the Eagles had a real advantage inside as they outscored the Bulldogs 26-8 on points in the paint.

The Bulldogs will graduate two standout players in seniors Brianna Talley and Katie Piepel.

Congratulations to the 2023-24 Cashmere Bulldogs for an outstanding season!
