Cashmere FFA performs well at State Apple Judging Competition

Posted

CASHMERE - The Cashmere FFA teams displayed exceptional skill and knowledge at the recent State FFA Apple Judging Contest, securing commendable positions and individual accolades.

At the competition on Dec. 6, Cashmere FFA Teams claimed 2nd and 3rd positions, with four individuals ranking within the top ten.

Notably, Dina Schoengarth's impressive 2nd place finish was a mere 4 points away from securing a $1,000 scholarship.

Prior to the state event, Cashmere FFA excelled at the District Contest, achieving first, second, and fourth positions and positioning eight students within the top 10.

For both competitions, contestants had to identify fruit varieties from a list of 13 apples and pears in addition to common fruit blemishes such as codling moth, indenture, leaf roller or scale to name a few.

Students also had to be familiar with sections of the Private Applicators Manual, calculate projected harvest dates and identify almost 30 different insects and mites that impact the fruit industry.

Contestants had to determine the internal pressure of an apple as it relates to storage and shipping.

There were 43 teams and over 200 members that competed at the state event in Kennewick. Eleven Cashmere students participated in the event.
