Cashmere students honor local veterans with assembly, luncheon

CASHMERE — Students and community members packed the Cashmere High School gym on Nov. 10 to honor those who have served this Veterans Day.

“Getting to honor our veterans and those who have passed, getting to just see them all feel impacted by this assembly and how they felt honored is really cool for me,” said eighth grader Sarah Flick.

The Veterans Day assembly involved both middle and high school students, featuring music by the CHS band and choir, readings by students, and a speech from keynote speaker, Army veteran and Cashmere Middle School Teacher Olivia Newberry.

“The United States of America didn't spring up out of nothing, without purpose… We choose to uphold our American ideals and principles through intentionally learning, believing and carrying out our American rights to pursue that more perfect union. It starts with the individual and the choices that you make each day,” said Newberry.

Newberry encouraged students to honor veterans by carrying out their values in their everyday lives: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage.

“We can honor veterans today by showing them that we will not let their service be in vain. It will not only make America great, but it will bring purpose to your own lives,” said Newberry.

“It was really cool when Mrs. Newberry did her speech. It actually hit me really, really hard, because it was just really powerful,” said eighth grader Mason Bjorklund.

The assembly was followed by a luncheon at the American Legion Hall, which was organized by Cashmere Middle School students. In addition to rehearsing and decorating for the assembly, the middle school students helped advertise the luncheon, order food, and decorate the American Legion Hall.

“I really like just being able to see all of the veterans and people come together, because I have a great grandparent who's a veteran, and his wife has passed, so he's kind of alone quite a bit, and it's just really good to be able to see more veterans be able to come together and meet them,” said eighth grader Makinsey Tait.
