WENATCHEE — The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement officials and attempt to extort money.
Sheriff Mike Morrison said several citizens reported receiving calls from individuals falsely claiming to be employees of the Sheriff’s Office, specifically impersonating Chief Ryan Moody.
The scammer typically tells the victim they failed to appear for jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller then pressures the person to make an immediate payment, often through a Bitcoin machine, authorities said.
“The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens law enforcement will never demand payment or request sensitive personal information over the phone,” Morrison said in the release.
Residents who receive such calls are urged to hang up immediately and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 509-667-6851 to verify the claim.
Officials encouraged the public to remain vigilant and to help spread the warning to prevent others from becoming victims.
