EAST WENATCHEE — Eastmont High School will launch an Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program in the 2027-28 school year, offering students academic credit for leadership training without requiring a commitment to military service.
The Eastmont School Board approved a partnership with U.S. Army Cadet Command to establish the program, according to a statement from Eastmont School District. Student registration and enrollment details will be released in spring 2027.
The multiyear program will be offered as a career and technical education course, with instruction focused on leadership, citizenship, character development and personal growth. Students will develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while progressing through the program together.
“JROTC adds a strong new avenue to consider, whether that leads to college, a career, or serving in the armed forces,” Matt Charlton, assistant superintendent of secondary education, said in the statement.
Participation carries no military obligation, and students are not required to enlist after graduation.
The district said the program can help students prepare competitive applications for full-tuition college ROTC scholarships and develop skills applicable to civilian careers. Students who choose to enlist after high school may qualify for advanced rank and higher starting pay.
Retired Army Brig. Gen. Dick Black spearheaded the effort to bring JROTC to Eastmont, drawing inspiration from regional programs including Wenatchee’s Air Force JROTC, according to the district.
“I strongly support this decision,” Black said in the statement. “A career in the United States Army provided me amazing career opportunities and the opportunity to serve my country.”
Eastmont and Army Cadet Command will begin recruiting two full-time instructors in early 2027. A senior Army instructor, a qualified retired officer, will lead the department. An Army instructor, a qualified retired noncommissioned officer, will handle drill instruction and student mentorship.
Local veterans and eligible service members interested in the positions can review application details through the U.S. Army JROTC employment page.
