Peshastin Library to Host Annual Ice Cream Social July 26

Posted

PESHASTIN — The Peshastin Friends of the Library will hold their annual Ice Cream Social on Saturday, July 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. on the library lawn.

“The library's been in existence since 1966, and for most of that time the Friends of the Library has put on the ice cream social,” said Friends of the Library President Diane Huntsinger-Carson. “It has always been both a community event and a fundraiser, which it still is.”

This year’s fundraiser aims to help rebuild the group’s reserve fund after last year’s costly repairs uncovered dry rot in the building’s subfloor during extensive renovations.

“We’re a little unique,” Huntsinger-Carson said. “Most libraries have friends groups, but we own our building and grounds, which is a little unusual. We are responsible for paying for all maintenance.”

Though the group has a contract with NCW Libraries that covers part of the expenses, the Friends are still financially responsible for the building and grounds, which are located in the unincorporated community of Peshastin.

The event features live music by the Saddle Rockers, a book sale by donation, and a wide range of activities for kids—including fire truck rides, a bouncy house, and games.

“We get present residents, past residents—people who went to school here and live someplace else will show up,” Huntsinger-Carson said. “There's a lot of visiting we do. It all happens outside.”

A highlight of the evening is the “cake spin,” a fundraiser similar to a cake walk. Attendees purchase numbers for a chance to win one of several cakes raffled off throughout the event.

The community is encouraged to bring homemade desserts to share. The Friends provide the ice cream, and guests can purchase slices of pie, brownies, and other treats.

“We’re happy to welcome the community in the larger sense to come and enjoy the event,” Huntsinger-Carson said. “We encourage you to bring a dessert to share. And bring your kids.”

Donations are also welcome.
