Wenatchee Valley Astronomy Club continues the Astronomy on the Lake series beginning July 11

Posted

LAKE WENATCHEE– The Wenatchee Valley Astronomy Club will kick off its summer Astronomy by the Lake series July 11, offering community members the chance to explore the night sky from the shores of Lake Wenatchee. While the events begin at 10:30 p.m. July 11 and 18, 9:30 p.m. Aug. 15 and 8:30 p.m. Sept. 12, organizers ask attendees to arrive 10 minutes early.

Using large telescopes, lasers, and other astronomy tools, participants will learn about stars, galaxies, and supernovae while observing celestial features such as Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s distinctive bands and the moon’s surface topography. The program will also examine constellations and explore their historical significance as well as their role in modern astronomy.

The free program takes place at the south shore beach at Lake Wenatchee State Park. While a Discover Pass is required for parking, attendees participating in the event will receive special after-hours access after the park closes at dusk. Annual Discover passes cost $45, while day passes are available for $10.

Participants are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the evening on the beach, and are urged to dress appropriately for the weather and to bring bug spray. To preserve night vision and minimize light pollution, organizers ask attendees to avoid using white lights and instead use red lights when possible. Vehicle headlights should be turned off or directed away from the beach.
